Abstract: This dissertation investigates contemporary artistic practice through a case study focused on the work of visual artist Busca. It is a theoretical-poetic research constructed through interviews, artist’s writings, process documents, and artwork analyses, articulating these materials as legitimate forms of knowledge production. The work is grounded in the hypothesis that the artist’s first-person voice constitutes a relevant epistemic approach within the field of art, capable of generating critical reflection and challenging traditional modes of academic validation. The structure of the dissertation proposes a play between different voices—that of the artist, other Brazilian creators, and the researcher—producing zones of contact between narrative, image, and thought. The methodological procedures adopt attentive listening as a starting point, shifting the focus from interpretation to dialogue, and from theoretical translation to the expansion of poetics. The research traverses themes such as precarity, symbolic economy, gesture, and deviation, engaging with works that deal with everyday life, humor, and the materiality of language. The analysis highlights how Busca’s work formulates a critique of the devices that regulate the production and circulation of art. Ultimately, the study reaffirms the potential of artist’s writings as a form of situated, embodied thinking that is inseparable from artistic making, proposing a research approach that operates between theory and practice, without hierarchies.

Título: Índice de criminalidade ponderado : violência letal e interiorização do crime na Bahia (2021-2023).

Abstract: This research investigates the configurations of lethal violence in the state of Bahia, Brazil, with emphasis on the interiorization of crime and the emergence of subregional cities as new epicenters of lethality. Recognizing that conventional metrics—such as homicide rates—are insufficient to explain the territorial complexity of criminality, the study proposes the development of a Weighted Crime Index (WCI). Its analytical application results from a dialogue across multiple theoretical fields, articulating perspectives from the social sciences, critical geography, contemporary criminology, and urban studies. Drawing from authors such as Milton Santos, Lefebvre, Loïc Wacquant, Teresa Caldeira, Zaluar, Misse, Saquet, Brito, and Marcelo Lopes de Souza, the research addresses issues of territorial inequality, mechanisms of stigmatization, and the formation of informal centralities. Critical geography contributes with the notion of territory as a field of dispute and power mediation, highlighting the materiality of space as both expression and instrument of social logics—an essential element in understanding the spatialization of violence and the selective presence of the state. Criminological approaches, particularly from critical and environmental strands, inform discussions on criminal governance, factional presence, and spatial clustering of crime. Urbanism contributes tools to analyze the relationship between urban morphology, infrastructure, and vulnerability to violence, especially regarding the fragmentation of public policies and the lack of integrated planning. By combining these theoretical currents, the research builds a robust and interdisciplinary framework capable of interpreting lethal violence as a multidimensional phenomenon—territorial, political, institutional, and urban— and proposes analytical and operational pathways for its critical understanding and mitigation. The methodology integrates statistical analysis, spatial modeling, expert interviews, and the Delphi technique to weight the selected variables. Findings reveal structured spatial patterns of lethality associated with criminal factions, urban vulnerabilities, and logistical crime networks. The study contributes to the field of public security by proposing an innovative analytical tool with high applicability to preventive public policies, urban planning, and territorial justice. By placing territory as a central analytical dimension, this work challenges traditional statistical logic and offers a deeper interpretation of crime grounded in geographic context, power structures, and historical inequalities. The index not only identifies critical areas of lethality but also reveals how certain localities are functionalized by illicit networks and impacted by the strategic withdrawal of the state.

Título: O pensamento científico de Francis Bacon

Abstract: This work is grounded in the relevance of Francis Bacon’s oeuvre and thought to the History of Science — evident in the vitality, contemporaneity, and wide-reaching impact of his work. By defending experience as an essential stage of knowledge, Bacon introduced a decisive break with the Aristotelian model. For him, true science required a rigorous, methodical, and progressive process based on controlled observation and systematic experimentation. This emphasis on the experimental method anticipated core elements of what would later become the modern scientific method. His philosophy of science foreshadowed many of the foundational principles of scientific knowledge that would only be consolidated later. In Bacon’s view, objectivity does not consist in a direct correspondence between subject and world, but rather in a progressive achievement — one that results from the elimination of the mind’s biases and the systematic reorganization of experience. It is not merely a matter of accumulating empirical data, but a deliberate effort to purify the understanding, involving the suspension of hasty judgments and the control of subjective inclinations. Among his main contributions are: the formulation of the inductive method; the defense of knowledge as a collective and progressive effort; the emphasis on organization and planning in scientific activity; and the proposal of a natural and experimental history capable of integrating the description of nature with technical mastery over it — in favor of improving the human condition.

Abstract: Traditional communities maintain a harmonious relationship with space and nature. These interactions are revealed through their ways of life, which are rooted in ancestral practices passed down through generations. Based on these connections, guaiamum fishing communities have mobilized to protect their traditional fishing practices and their ways of life. As a tool for mobilization and coping with the conflicts surrounding their guaiamum fishing practices, the community members of the Canavieiras Extractive Reserve, located in southern Bahia, chose to register on the Traditional Territories Platform. This paper, therefore, has the general objective of discussing the effects of registering the guaiamum fishing territory on the aforementioned platform and thus understanding the contradictions linked to the visibility of the territory that the registration provides. To this end, we will pose some fundamental questions, such as to what extent the development of the document can strengthen self-knowledge for territorial self-management, what are the possible impacts of not including communities in the Canavieiras Extractive Reserve's demarcation, and what role do institutions and legal instruments play in strengthening territorial self-management. Thus, to develop the registration process, we took as a starting point an action research approach, aligned with the qualitative method, based on joint action with the communities. To ensure complementarity, theoretical materials were used alongside practical field activities. The registration process of the Goiamunzeiro Territory on the Traditional Territories Platform, although still under analysis, proved to be an important tool for valuing community knowledge, political strengthening, and identity affirmation of the guaiamum fishing communities. More than a formal registration, the initiative generated internal reflections focused on community self-management through traditional knowledge and the protection of lifeways and territory.

Abstract: Introduction: Occupational Therapy in Gerontology aims to promote autonomy, independence, and quality of life for the elderly, considering their functional capacities, social context, and the challenges of aging. The role of the Occupational Therapist involves strategies to maintain or recover participation in meaningful activities. Objective:To investigate the professional practices of Occupational Therapists working in Gerontology in Salvador, Bahia, with an emphasis on their sociodemographic and professional profiles, the theoretical frameworks that underpin their practices, and the main actions developed to ensure safety and functionality for the elderly. Method:An exploratory-descriptive study with a mixed (quantitative-qualitative) approach, conducted in a virtual environment, involving Occupational Therapists with active registration at the Regional Council of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy (CREFITO). Data collection took place in March 2025, through a form on the Google Forms platform. The study investigated: training/specialization in Gerontology, use of assessments, models and theoretical references, clinical practices, caregiver support strategies, analysis of the home environment, experiences with illiterate elderly individuals, and related challenges. The qualitative analysis methodology was Content Analysis, while the quantitative results were organized into frequency data. Results:The research identified the following categories of analysis: (a) Theoretical support and instruments, including the use of models of professional practice, functional assessment tools, and social participation measures; (b) Listening in care production; and (c) Evaluation and adaptations of the home environment. Challenges in caring for illiterate elderly individuals were also discussed. The profile of the responding Occupational Therapists revealed diversity in training and experience. The reported professional practices demonstrated that caring for the elderly involves listening, welcoming, and strategies aimed at safety and functionality, including within the home setting. Conclusion: The data highlight the importance of the Occupational Therapist's role in Gerontology in Salvador, focusing on promoting active aging and quality of life. It was observed that the participating professionals have solid ongoing education, adopt specific theoretical-methodological models, and client-centered approaches. The use of instruments such as COPM and the Barthel Index was emphasized. Qualified listening emerged as a light-care technology, essential for welcoming, supporting caregivers, and environmental adaptations. The practices also demonstrated sensitivity to the specific needs of illiterate elderly individuals.

Título: Contribuições da Teoria da Atividade de Leontiev para o uso das Tecnologias Digitais no Ensino de Química.

Abstract: The objective of this work is to understand how Leontiev's Activity Theory can be used to train Chemistry teachers for the use of digital technologies that surpass a fetishized view of them. To achieve this objective, we first discuss the social formation of the individual based on Marx's historical-dialectical materialism, understanding that the human being, in order to cope with their existence, transforms nature to create conditions to meet their needs, such as biological needs like hunger and thirst, and social needs. In this process, they produce non-natural means that help in this activity and transform their psyche. This is what we call technologies. Therefore, technologies are the result of human needs, and digital technologies follow this pattern. We perceive the role of digital technologies in our lives at all times; they are already rooted in the daily lives of individuals who end up using them indiscriminately, without perceiving the social relations behind them. This is what we call a fetishized or decontextualized view of technology. This indiscriminate use also reflects in education and the teaching of chemistry, where many teachers use these resources unreflectively. Thus, in the first article of this work, we analyze the theoretical bases that researchers who use digital technologies in chemistry teaching have adopted, since the appropriate theoretical basis can help overcome this problem. We notice that most works do not present a theoretical basis for the use of digital resources in chemistry teaching, limiting discussions to more superficial aspects and justifications related to the possibility of technology solving chemistry problems. The second article, then, aimed to debate how Leontiev's Activity Theory has been used in chemistry teaching, as we argue that this theory can shed light on solving the problem of the fetishized view of technology in chemistry teaching. The third and final article discusses a proposal for training chemistry teachers for the use of digital technology based on Activity Theory. The proposal was for a course taught at the Federal University of Bahia, in the Chemistry Licentiate program. The results indicated that, despite some participants continuing with a fetishized perspective, they began to understand the motivations for using digital technologies, indicating a step towards a critical conception of their use. Therefore, we consider that, with due care, Activity Theory can be a way to think about how to use digital technology in chemistry teaching.

Título: Concepções de especismo em livros didáticos: ética no ensino de ciências como uma ferramenta para o antiespecismo
Autor(es): Almeida, Laís dos Santos

Abstract: This dissertation results from an investigation into how speciesism is addressed in 7th-grade Science textbooks, guided by the Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC) and approved by the Programa Nacional do Livro Didático (PNLD 2024). The research is based on the premise that the absence of discussions on animal ethics and speciesism contributes to the perpetuation of anthropocentric and instrumental views of nature, limiting students’ critical development. The introduction presents the personal and academic paths that motivated the choice of the topic. The first chapter offers a theoretical overview of speciesism, ethical approaches, and their relationship with education. The second chapter deepens the discussion on the role of the BNCC and the Science, Technology, Society, and Environment (STSE) approach in fostering critical scientific education. The third chapter describes the methodology, including the development of an analytical tool applied to the BNCC and the textbooks. The fourth chapter examines five textbook collections approved by the PNLD, followed by the final considerations. The results reveal a predominance of anthropocentric and speciesist approaches, as well as a lack of content that acknowledges the intrinsic value of non-human animals. The dissertation advocates for the incorporation of non-anthropocentric ethical perspectives (sentientism, biocentrism, and ecocentrism) into Science education, in an interdisciplinary manner and aligned with the STSE framework. It concludes that there is an urgent need to rethink educational materials and pedagogical practices, expanding the moral consideration of animals in order to overcome speciesism and promote a more ethical, critical, and environmentally conscious education.

Abstract: This study evaluated the production performance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in cage culture systems, comparing the zootechnical performance and environmental impacts of fish fed a commercial control diet (31% crude protein) and three isoproteic test diets (28.4% crude protein), formulated with predominantly plant-based ingredients and different mineral supplements. The experimental diets included one formulation with inorganic minerals and two with organic mineral supplements: CrZn – chromium chelated to methionine (0.8 mg·kg⁻¹) and zinc chelated to amino acids (60 mg·kg⁻¹); and CrFe – chromium chelated to methionine (0.8 mg·kg⁻¹) and iron chelated to amino acids (62.5 mg·kg⁻¹). The experiment was conducted over a 96-day period. In addition to productive performance, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was carried out to estimate the environmental impacts associated with each feeding strategy. Fish fed the control diet showed the best zootechnical indices (weight gain per fish: 0.65 kg; biomass gain per cage: 92.5 kg; apparent feed intake: 1.53). However, due to the higher inclusion of animal-based ingredients in the control diet, its environmental performance resulted in greater impacts across all assessed categories. Fish fed the experimental diets showed higher survival rates — particularly in the CrZn (99%) and CrFe (91%) treatments.
Results of energy and nutrient retention and excretion indicated that the CrZn treatment achieved higher retention of nitrogen (31%), phosphorus (25%), and energy (27%), along with lower nitrogen (46 kg·t⁻¹) and energy (4,555 Mcal·t⁻¹) excretion values, supporting the lower environmental impacts associated with this diet. In all evaluated categories, the experimental diets led to reduced environmental contributions, with reductions ranging from 36% to 67%. The results suggest that the use of plant-based proteins combined with organic mineral supplementation contributes to improved energy and nutrient utilization, even under protein-restricted conditions, and provides environmental benefits through the reduction of nitrogen and phosphorus waste in the environment. They also highlight the potential of alternative diets formulated with plant ingredients and organic minerals as a strategy to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of intensive aquaculture systems, such as cage farming.

Título: Análise da metilação do DNA em amostras gástricas e associação com infecção por Helicobacter pylori
Autor(es): Sandes, Lidiane Ferraz
Primeiro Orientador: Marques, Cintia Rodrigues
Abstract: Helicobacter pylori infection is a significant risk factor for the development of inflammatory
and neoplasic changes in the stomach, contributing to the pathogenesis of gastric diseases,
particularly through epigenetic mechanisms. This experimental study aimed to examine the
DNA methylation profile of the IL6, SOCS1, MGMT, and MLH1 genes in gastric mucosal
samples, considering the presence of H. pylori infection and the detection of the virulence
gene cagA. Samples underwent DNA extraction, followed by sodium bisulfite conversion
and analysis using the MS-HRM technique. IL6 methylation was categorized into 0-25% and
25-50%, with stratification by sex, age, and bacterial strain status. Statistical analyses
included the Student’s t-test to compare mean methylation levels between H. pylori-positive
and -negative groups, and chi-square or Fisher’s exact test, as appropriate, considering p <
0,05 as the significance threshold for associations between categorical variables. The results
indicated that infected individual were twice as likely to exhibit moderate methylation of the
IL6 gene compared to non-infected individuals (OR = 2.00; 95% CI: 0.56–7.62; p = 0.284),
and those infected with cagA-positive strains had a higher risk compared to those with cagA-
negative strains (OR = 1.56; 95% CI: 0.41–5.85; p = 0.508), although these differences were
not statistically significant. Among men, a significant association was observed (p = 0.035),
with 100% of infected individuals showing moderate methylation versus 40% in the non-
infected group; no significant difference was found among women (p = 0.765). Methylation
of the SOCS1 and MLH1 genes was not detected in any of the samples, regardless of
infection status, while MGMT methylation was observed in only three individuals (6.82%),
all at low levels, preventing statistical analysis. Although no statistically significant
association was observed with cagA status, all men infected with cagA-positive strains
exhibited moderate methylation. These findings suggest that H. pylori infection may
modulate IL6 gene methylation, particularly in males, and underscore the role of epigenetic
mechanisms in the molecular pathways underlying gastric inflammation and disease
progression, especially in high- prevalence populations.

Abstract: This thesis stemmed from an unease with the lexicon of precariousness associated with the popular world—a foundational base of much of urban studies, especially within Architecture and Urbanism. Since urban popular classes are predominantly Black, the link between “popular” and “precarious” reveals a false racial neutrality, leading me to scrutinize the dynamics, complexities, and epistemologies of dwelling mobilized in popular and Black territories. The investigation adopted a situated, intersectional, and embodied approach, built through research encounters with my hosts — three Black women living in Itapuã, in Salvador (BA), and in the urban occupations Alto da Conquista and Marielle Franco, in the city’s metropolitan region. From their urban trajectories, memories, and practices of life-making, feminine epistemologies and grammars emerge which, especially grounded in mothering, shape their dwelling processes. Their houses thus stood out as agents in the production of their worlds, intertwining care, labor, ancestry, desires, networks, absences, and anxieties in the material production of homes. By affirming other meanings of dwelling, the relationship between these women-mothers and their houses points to an ontological opening toward forms of urban existence that exceed the colonial grammar that (still) structures our ways of thinking and acting in the city.
